Wall Street Set for Best Two Years Ever, Thanks To Bailout

William Alden
THE HUFFINGTON POST

Two agonizing years for the U.S. economy have been some of the best years on record for Wall Street.

After first receiving billions in taxpayer aid, and now ultracheap funding from the Federal Reserve, Wall Street banks are on track to wrap up two of their best years ever.

Even if the current quarter only matches the third in revenue, this year will be the second best ever for Wall Street, capping a two-year winning streak fueled by government dollars, Bloomberg reports. With more than $100 billion in their pockets from the Troubled Asset Relief Program, which offered them hundreds of billions more, the five biggest investment banks — Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, Bank of America, Citigroup and Morgan Stanley — have seen their revenue this year climb to $93.7 billion.

“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for most of these banks, and I think they’ve recognized it as that,” finance professor Charles Geisst told Bloomberg.

The assistance hasn’t stopped with TARP. The Fed is in the process of buying $600 billion in government debt — from banks. As part of its quantitative easing program, the Fed announces its purchases ahead of time, giving certain banks an opportunity to profit on the trades. The asset-purchase program, intended to augment the flow of cash through the economy, is first and foremost a boon for corporate America.

According to an October estimate, Wall Street firms are set to pay out $144 billion in bonuses this year, to break a record for the second year in a row. When the government looked at pay practices of firms that got government help, then-pay czar Kenneth Feinberg determined the bonuses were “ill-advised” but decided they shouldn’t be clawed back — even though he later portrayed Wall Street banks as “using taxpayer money to feather their own nests.”

Critics note the disparity between banks’ earnings and the state of the real economy.

“An economic recovery is about what happens to American families, it’s what happens in the real economy,” special White House adviser Elizabeth Warren told Bloomberg television. “It isn’t meaningful to talk about profits and a growing economy until Americans are stabilized.”

After the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression, caused in part by large-scale gambling on Wall Street, unemployment has remained stuck around 10 percent. Companies, meanwhile, are hoarding cheap cash instead of using it to create jobs. According to Federal Reserve data released last week, companies increased their cash holdings by 7.3 percent in the third quarter, setting a new record. Relative to their short-term liabilities, corporations haven’t sat on this much cash since 1956.

Even as Wall Street celebrates its winning steak, Wall Street pay practices, which rewarded short-term risk-taking in the years leading up to the crisis, have worsened, according to a new report. Rules that were intended to make chief executives concerned for their companies’ long-term health have instead caused their salaries to grow, without adding any real incentive to curb excessively risky behavior, the Council of Institutional Investors report concludes.

President NAFTA Backs President SHAFTA

By Jeff Cohen
HUFFINGTON POST

It was a stunning spectacle yesterday afternoon when former President Clinton took the podium from President Obama in the White House briefing room to help shove the Obama-GOP tax deal down the throats of Democratic activists and Congress members.

It was a fitting spectacle too (carried live on CNN) — since Bill Clinton paved the way in teaching how a Democratic president can win battles through the votes not of his own party but the Republicans.

Remember NAFTA, the trade deal loved by big business and Republicans — and opposed by Democratic constituencies like unions, environmentalists and consumer advocates? Clinton passed NAFTA with the votes of nearly 80 percent of GOP senators and almost 70 percent of House Republicans. Meanwhile, House Democrats opposed NAFTA by more than 3 to 2.

More than a year ago, I warned (“Get Ready for the Obama/GOP Alliance”) that Obama would follow Clinton’s lead in winning some of his biggest fights by allying with the GOP against his own base.

Following a long period of White House lecturing and name-calling (“the professional left,” “f**king retarded”) aimed at the activists who put him in the Oval Office, Obama has again shafted his base and broken a promise, this time on tax breaks for the rich.

Look for another Obama/GOP alliance if Democrats in Congress find their voices over Obama’s bloody, costly, unwinnable folly in Afghanistan.

These kinds of deals can become habit-forming. After NAFTA, Clinton went on to other bipartisan deals — cutting welfare for the poor while extending welfare to the media conglomerates in 1996, and concluding his tenure with deregulatory giveaways to the investment banks that directly led to the financial meltdown of 2008.

And Obama seems to have less backbone and firm principles than even Bill Clinton — even more prone to a Stockholm syndrome-tendency to cozy up to his Republican batterers.

So it was quite a scene yesterday, with CNN pundits almost giddy that the gray ghost of pro-corporate “bipartisan compromise” was back at the White House.

Meanwhile, independent Bernie Sanders was electrifying much of the country by railing for 8 and ½ hours in the Senate against the wealthy getting billions in tax breaks while deficit-hawks take aim at Social Security and other vital programs.

I’m sure I wasn’t the only American fantasizing that one day a fighting independent like Bernie (Sanders) would be in the White House.

Instead, with Obama, we seem to be getting the best Republican president since… well… since Clinton.

Where is the Press? Amy Goodman Reports From the Empty Media Center at Center at UN Climate Summit

Democracy Now! host Amy Goodman was startled to find the press room at the U.N. Climate Change Conference eerily quiet this week. Rows and rows of computers sat unused. At last year’s climate meeting in Copenhagen, the room was buzzing with hundreds of reporters.

Today, however, climate change seems to be a forgotten story. Thus, it was not surprising to find that the major TV broadcast networks in the United States seemed to be ignoring the conference. Democracy Now! producers reviewed the transcripts of last week’s evening news broadcasts on ABC, CBS and NBC in the United States, and found that the Cancún climate talks were not mentioned a single time.

Eventually, a lonely reporter ventured into the media center, giving Amy Goodman someone to talk to. Oliver Morton, the energy and environment editor for The Economist, talked about the difficulty of tracking down U.N. diplomats at the vast Moon Palace Hotel and compared it to his experience reporting from Copenhagen.

Democracy Now! will be reporting from the U.N. Climate Change Conference in Cancún all week. For the complete interview, transcripts and audio/video podcasts, visit Democracy Now! Click here for our complete coverage of the climate change talks. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter.

SOLUTIONS: AgenKultur

Great organization in Indonesia!

AGENKULTUR

Agenkultur born in a hysterical space of billboards among the massive icons of globalization and in the crowd of local culture stagnancy. It grew up among the fast food industry, phantasm of high class society welfare injected by the soap opera business and our culture of consumption.

Agenkultur realizes that the greatest threat for the world today is not dull-haired people or celebrities having affair as shown on TV screen. Among us is the reality, that many children have dropped out from schools to be stranded on the street and the slum on the edge of the global economic highway.

Agenkultur is an independent institute, founded by a group of common people, who have committed to make a big change and improving the social life, environment and culture by working collectively in profound activities within social interactions based on sense of care and equality.

Agenkultur does not mean ‘you’ and ‘me’, but a unity of ‘Us’ ; a unity of individuals desiring to fill in our lives merely by taking even the least role in any aspect of lives for the sake of changes.

Q: Whose Taxes Are Going Up?

A: Individuals making less than $20,000/year and families making less than $40,000/year.

YOU’LL NEVER GUESS WHOSE TAXES ARE GOING UP BECAUSE OF THE TAX COMPROMISE

By Jason Linkins
HUFFINGTON POST

You know, with all the talk about who is mad at President Barack Obama and who stands to win or lose what election over this tax-cut deal, not as much attention has been paid to the practical beneficiaries of the deal. Well, over at The New York Times tonight, David Kocieniewski’s got the hard numbers, and finds that the deal is actually a very good one, as long as one or more of the following terms describes you:

–“the highest earners”
–“the wealthiest 1 percent of the population”
–“the wealthiest Americans”
–“hedge fund managers and private equity investors”
–“an individual earning $110,000”
–“4 million taxpayers with income in the mid- to high six figures”
–“Estates over $5 million”

To those of you who fit the descriptions above, congratulations! Really, is anyone not making out like a bandit, with this tax-cut compromise?

In fact, the only groups likely to face a tax increase are those near the bottom of the income scale — individuals who make less than $20,000 and families with earnings below $40,000.

There’s probably a way of looking at this that doesn’t make it seem so bad, right?

Although the $120 billion payroll tax reduction offers nearly twice the tax savings of the credit it replaces, it will nonetheless lead to higher tax bills for individuals with incomes below $20,000 and families that make less than $40,000. That is because their payroll tax savings are less than the $400 or $800 they will lose from the Making Work Pay credit.

No worries! Poor people don’t create jobs, anyway, I hear.

“It will come to a few dollars a week,” said Roberton Williams, an analyst at the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center, “but it is an increase.”

Europe’s Shell Game

Planet Money

Europe is borrowing money to bail out countries that got in trouble by borrowing too much money.

Satyajit Das explains that European countries aren’t actually putting their own money into that trillion-dollar bailout fund. Instead, the fund will borrow from investors around the world — the same investors who are growing wary of lending to a bunch of countries in Europe.

What’s more, the fund will be guaranteed by the countries that use the euro. So the more the fund is used, the more countries that are already struggling — countries like Spain and Italy — will be on the hook for potential losses.
