Blowin’ in the Idiot Wind

By Maureen Dowd
The New York Times

Bob Dylan may have done the impossible: broken creative new ground in selling out.

The idea that the raspy troubadour of ’60s freedom anthems would go to a dictatorship and not sing those anthems is a whole new kind of sellout — even worse than Beyoncé, Mariah and Usher collecting millions to croon to Qaddafi’s family, or Elton John raking in a fortune to serenade gay-bashers at Rush Limbaugh’s fourth wedding.

Before Dylan was allowed to have his first concert in China on Wednesday at the Worker’s Gymnasium in Beijing, he ignored his own warning in “Subterranean Homesick Blues” — “Better stay away from those that carry around a fire hose” — and let the government pre-approve his set.

Iconic songs of revolution like “The Times They Are a-Changin,’ ” and “Blowin’ in the Wind” wouldn’t have been an appropriate soundtrack for the 2,000 Chinese apparatchiks in the audience taking a relaxing break from repression.

Spooked by the surge of democracy sweeping the Middle East, China is conducting the harshest crackdown on artists, lawyers, writers and dissidents in a decade. It is censoring (or “harmonizing,” as it euphemizes) the Internet and dispatching the secret police to arrest willy-nilly, including Ai Weiwei, the famous artist and architect of the Bird’s Nest, Beijing’s Olympic stadium.

Dylan said nothing about Weiwei’s detention, didn’t offer a reprise of “Hurricane,” his song about “the man the authorities came to blame for something that he never done.” He sang his censored set, took his pile of Communist cash and left.

Executive Pay Soars In 2010, While Millions Lose Their Jobs and Homes

By Daniel Costello
New York Times

UNLIKE some previous years, 2010 registered broad gains in executive pay, benefiting C.E.O.’s from nearly all parts of the economy.

HAPPY days are back — in the corner office, at least.

After shrinking during the 2008-9 recession, paychecks for top American executives are growing again — in many cases, significantly so.

Rarely has the view from the corner office seemed so at odds with the view from the street corner. At a time when millions of Americans are trying to hang on to homes and millions more are trying to hang on to jobs, the chief executives of major corporations like 3M, General Electric and Cisco Systems are making as much today as they were before the recession hit. Indeed, some are making even more.

The disparity is especially stark as companies are swimming in cash. In the fourth quarter, profits at American businesses were up an astounding 29.2 percent, the fastest growth in more than 60 years. Collectively, American corporations logged profits at an annual rate of $1.678 trillion.

So far, this recovery has not trickled down. After two relatively lean years, C.E.O.’s in finance, technology, energy and beyond are pulling down multimillion-dollar paychecks. What many of these executives aren’t doing, however, is hiring. Unemployment, although down from its peak, stood at 8.8 percent in March. And few economists predict the jobless rate will drop substantially anytime soon.

For the average C.E.O., however, the good times have returned. The median pay for top executives at 200 major companies was $9.6 million last year. That was a 12 percent increase over 2009, according to a study conducted for The New York Times by Equilar, a compensation consulting firm based in Redwood City, Calif.

Yoko Ono can’t Imagine Stephen Harper singing Lennon

Yoko refuses to let war-loving Canadian Prime Minister sing Imagine on YouTube

Stephen Harper’s attempt to play off the popularity of Maria Aragon has backfired.

Yoko Ono had the Harper video of Imagine yanked off YouTube.

Nothing could be more false than Stephen Harper singing Lennon’s hope for peace in the world.

Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace

“Harper would like to put all the gay, lesbian, activist female, abortionist, and left thinking Canadians back in a box. Then Harper and his right wing cronies can buy more fighter jets. They will have cleaned up Canada with missionary zeal.”

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world

Canada’s Prime Minister is all Jets and Jails with no love for people and peace.

At Least We Still Can Go Broke

I got a letter today from Alan Grayson. I don’t think he’ll mind me publishing it here since he is running for Congress. But – I think CIO readers will find this fascinating.

Dear Cheryl:

Unless you’ve been living in a cave recently – Osama, you can stop reading here – you know that the Republicans have blocked the passage of the appropriations bills that apply to all federal spending between April 8 and September 30, so we are facing a government shutdown.

And as the White House has patiently pointed out, that means no more government-backed mortgages, which now account for 95% of the housing market.

No more government student loans. No more government small-business loans.

No pay for the troops, who are now embroiled in three wars. They still have to fight. They just won’t be paid for it. Despite the Thirteenth Amendment.

No tax refunds, just one week before taxes are due.

No federal grants for roads, schools, or pretty much anything else.

No new medical research at the National Institutes of Health.

And hundreds of thousands of federal employees added to the unemployment rolls.

But there is one thing that you can still do, if the government shuts down.

You can go broke.

I’m a licensed attorney, and yesterday I received this cheerful reminder from a bankruptcy court to which I’m admitted:

“The Court will continue to operate, business as usual, on Monday, April 11, 2011.”

The staff, the bankruptcy court explained, will be paid out of “fee revenue and other sources.” Anyone who wants to petition for bankruptcy will be welcome to do so.

So there it is. When the Republicans shut down the government, health and safety, housing and even transportation are all at risk. But the one thing that you can be sure you can still do is . . . go broke.

For the bankruptcy courts, it’s “business as usual.” And the bankruptcy business is booming.

But leaving that one exception to the government shutdown aside, it’s now official. The Party of No is now the Party of No Government. The Party of Anarchy. The Party of Chaos.

And remember this: The White House and the Democratic Leadership have agreed (rightly or wrongly) to what the Republicans originally demanded for the 2011 budget — $30 billion in social spending cuts. Yet now the Republicans are demanding twice as much: $60 billion in 2011 social spending cuts.

But just three months ago, the Republicans insisted on $70 billion in 2011 in tax cuts for the rich. I’m pretty sure that $70 billion is more than $60 billion, any way you look at it. So except for those tax cuts for the rich, we wouldn’t be having this argument.

Please make a note on your calendar. November 6, 2012. Election Day. That’s when it will be our turn to punish them, the way that they’ve tried to punish all of us.

Courage,

Alan Grayson

Only 59% of Americans Support “Free Market” Capitalism

By Maxwell Strachen
HUFFINGTON POST

Nearly three years after the financial system first came perilously close to collapse, American support for an unregulated free market appears to have cratered.

A new report by GlobeScan, an international opinion research consultancy, suggests that the number of Americans who believe in the strength of the free market economy dropped markedly last year. In fact, according to the survey results, both Brazil and China, on a percentage basis, ranked higher than the U.S. in overall support for free market capitalism.

The report, released this week and based on 12,884 interviews in 25 countries, asked participants to agree or disagree with the statement that the “free market economy is the best system on which to base the future of the world.”

GlobeScan found Americans strongly agreeing or somewhat agreeing dropped to 59 percent from 74 percent, a 15 percent dip from the year prior and the second largest year-over-year drop of any country besides Turkey. An even more dramatic drop (32 percent drop) occurred among those in the U.S. with annual incomes below $20,000, of which only 44 percent agreed that the free market was the ideal system.

When GlobeScan first compiled this data in 2002, 80 percent of Americans answered that the free market was the best economic system for the future, then the highest percentage among all surveyed countries.

“America is the last place we would have expected to see such a sharp drop in trust in the free enterprise system,” GlobeScan Chairman Doug Miller said in a press release. “This is not good news for business.”

Immediately after the financial crisis, GlobeScan actually found a slow but steady increase in U.S. support for the free market. Miller, however, attributes that temporary uptick to the country’s “tremendous social cohesion” following sustained shocks such as financial collapse or terrorists attacks. “But after a while, after the hardship is sustained,” he continues, “it has caught up with Americans.”

The U.S. drop-off means merging economies like Brazil (68 percent support for free economy) and China (67 percent) now appear to support free enterprise at a much higher rate than Americans. India, with a 58 percent freemarket approval rate, roughly matched the U.S. results. Among participants in all countries, 54 percent said free market capitalism is the best economic system for the future — the same percentage as one year prior.

The total percentage of Americans that don’t trust the free market remains unchanged at 26 percent.

The below chart maps by year the percentage of Americans and Chinese that strongly agree or somewhat agree that the “free market economy is the best system on which to base the future of the world”:
