Saturday’s BIG RETURN

From Heather Sparks:
As a meditation on desire and consumer practices for the project Capitalism IS Over, I took a group around San Francisco to shop for things we really wanted, but asked everyone to return everything they bought by the end of the day.

We took full advantages of freebies- (hand lotion, hair products, perfume, free samples of coffee and food), were entertained by a fashion show, entranced and inspired by store displays, picked up models, and had romantic moments near the Nordstrom pianist– We all felt a rush of adrenaline when we bought coveted and expensive items– and a rush of relief when we returned everything.

Did Consumers Cause the BP Oil Disaster?

This view, usually called consumer sovereignty, is widely held, not just by conservative economists but by commentators of many political stripes. It is conventional wisdom in the worst sense of the term, a dominant superstition that is assumed to be obviously true and so is never questioned.

BLOW-OUT ODYSSEY

On Tuesday, August 10th Sean Fletcher and Isabel Reichert performed their newest piece, “Blow-Out Odyssey” as part of CAPITALISM IS OVER!. For this public intervention, the artists invited themselves — and their personal arguments with each other — into the offices of several downtown businesses.  While winding their way through the financial district, Fletcher and Reichert walked and argued, loudly and passionately, about their finances, their unintended moments of dishonesty, their expectations about the other’s role in the relationship, and their general frustrations with each other as a couple.

All the businesses chosen as stops along their voyage are dependent on oil for a significant portion of their revenue.  An interactive map, built to track their quarrelling journey through the financial district, shows the location of a software design firm that has developed programs to help oil companies track damage to their trans-national pipelines, an insurance firm that administers casualty claims for oil companies, an investment firm that diversifies clients’ investments into oil and energy stocks, and a law firm that drafts contracts for oil companies.  The artists even visited a company that uses solar technology to improve the effectiveness of drill rig platforms.

TODAY’S BIG RETURN

Join Heather Sparks and CIO! today for THE BIG RETURN! We meet at 10am in Union Square Park in San Francisco — return stuff you don’t need with the support of a group, or buy and return stuff as a meditation on consumption.

From Heather:
As a fashion stylist in the 1990′s, I learned to hate shopping. The repetitive action of shopping and returning became a kind of meditation on consumption and diffused my own need to consume. Working on catalogs for various products also demystified the lure of luxury brands and other consumer products. In the spirit of the fashion industry, join me for a day of binging and purging. We will shop and return as an exploration of desire and consumption. Those who would like to return previous purchases are also encouraged to make returns with the support of the group. The production of spontaneous de-haul videos will also be encouraged.

All shopping and returning will be done in Union Square from 10am to 6pm for the Capitalism Is Over performance in San Francisco. (if 10am on a Saturday is too early, contact me on facebook and I’ll let you know where to meet us later in the day)

Those who can’t attend but would like to participate, can submit documentation of returns (videos, stills, journal entries, voice recordings, written pieces) to be posted to the CIO website. All collaborators work will be credited.

Free the Weed: Give Medicine Away

Free the Weed’s aim is to take the capital out of California’s Big Green Hope, medical grade medicinal marijuana. Near maturation various Sativa cannabis buds have been guerilla planted in plain sight near and around pharmacies and converging thoroughfares in the Financial District of San Francisco. “Our medicine is meant to be utilized by all. Our intention is to give this medicine as a free alternative to the synthetic, manufactured variety and ask nothing in return.”
